Pointe-a-Pierre Government Special School is aligned to the operations of the primary school system. Therefore we utilize the primary school curriculum of Trinidad and Tobago, which is adapted to the needs of each individual student.
Some adaptations include;
accommodations: augmenting the methods of instruction and
modifications to the curriculum, to cater to our students’ special needs.
The application of curriculum objectives are selected based on the requirements of the student. The main purpose of this approach is to help students acquire the necessary skill that they require for independent living.
Our adapted curriculum also involves teaching social skills, speech and language development and functional living skills. Students with visual impairment have mobility training and use special computer programmes that allow them to navigate the digital world. Above all, we strive to make all learning fun and connect in-school learning to out-of-school activities and real life situations.
Our curriculum encompasses the following categories;
(a) Functional Academics
(b) Social and Functional Living Skills
(c) SEA preparation
(d) Technical Vocational Skills
Students are involved in A whole school reading programme, which focuses on the five dimensions of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension). Students are formally assessed so that instruction can be tailored to their specific needs.
Our school has created an ISP which is an adapted version of the commonly known Individual Education Plan (IEP). An IEP is a document that is tailored to the needs of an individual student. Information is learnt about the child from various sources including parents/guardians, teacher observations, assessment data and other documentation. An ISP is reviewed and completed yearly.
Another document that is developed at our school and is designed to serve the needs of individual students is the BIP. This document is developed for students who demonstrate challenges with social interaction and complying with some social norms and values. These challenges are also likely to inhibit a child’s learning ability. The BIP is designed based on information gathered on the child’s behaviour and lifestyle. This document is reviewed termly or monthly depending on the child’s response to the agreed recommended intervention strategies.
Parent teacher conferencing is necessary for the success of each student and the development of each document identified above. Parents/guardian will be informed of the scheduled dates for meetings with their child’s teacher. Parent/guardians are kindly asked to make every effort to attend.
